General information

Already five years ago the C.IN.E., the performing arts research centre in Sineu (Mallorca), opened its doors with the purpose of boosting creation in performing arts. The C.IN.E., an impressive building erected during the Second Republic (1931-36), and which hosted the town cinema for more than 50 years, was in a dreadful stage when the performing arts company Res de Res i En Blanc, created by Biel Jordà and Marta Barceló, purchased it in 2008 with the idea of turning it into a creation centre.

After seven years, three periods of renovation and countless anecdotes, our commitment remains unwavering, as is the will to improve year after year the facilities and services offered to the artists, and contribute to disseminating theatre and building bridges between creators and our local community.

What do we need your help for?

During these past years we have made a huge investment in every respect (in terms of finance, emotion, logistics, energy) in order to open the C.IN.E.'s doors. With both our own funds and European funding we have rebuilt the roof, the office, the halls and the basement. We currently have two halls, an office and toilets. However, there is a space which we haven't been able to renovate yet and which could be turned into a resting area for resident companies and artists.

It is the former projectionist's booth, on the building's second floor. A space which requires full renovation in order to become a resting area and thus add an essential space for resident companies. We also have the project of having access to the rooftop by building an inner stairway going up from the resting area.

In a first stage, we'll treat the area's wall for thermal insulation. We'll tile the whole area and replace the last fight of stairs, severely damaged due to the fire in the old cinema 25 years ago. After that, we'll undertake the electrical system for the whole space and the plumbing system for the kitchen and the bathroom. We'll build a stairway to access the rooftop and window grilles will be placed. Following that, the doors to the resting area, the rooftop access and the bathroom will be installed. Our final task will be painting the whole resting area and installing both bathroom and kitchen furniture and appliances.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

The C.IN.E. was created to fill an existing void in the Balearic Islands (Spain) and in its five years of existence it has become an essential creation centre. From its inauguration onward it has supported more than fifty companies (from the Balearic Islands, the rest of Spain and the rest of the world), it has organised workshops, it has mediated between the artists and the local community and has organised the five editions of CICLOP, the visual theatre festival held in September in Sineu.

The C.IN.E has two halls. The most important one is the SALA GRAN (Main Hall), a multifunctional open space, 16 m deep and 13.5 m wide, reaching up to 10.5 m high. These features make it ideal for hosting large-format projects, circus and new dramaturgies.

The SALA CALDERA (Boiler Hall), which was the former cinema's bar and which features elements unveiling the different stages the building underwent. Situated in the basement, this space's measurements are 13 m deep, 4.43 m wide and 2.88 high. It mainly hosts small-format projects.

We have worked hard to build international connections, and are founding members of the Island Connect network, made up of five centres located in islands of Denmark, Croatia, Greece, Ireland and Spain. Together we organise exchanges and training workshops which open doors for the Balearic companies. We also have ongoing projects with centres in France and the Netherlands.

This allows us to create exchange and growth opportunities for the companies from the Balearic Islands, who thanks to the C.IN.E.'s are able to widen their professional networks.

In the local sphere, we are connected to the town of Sineu through two initiatives: on the one hand, the Ciclop festival allows us to set in motion projects with and for the community (Nit Canalla, a community show with the town's population, etc.); on the other hand, the associated company, selected every year, includes in its research activities to link itself to Sineu inhabitants.

In a nutshell, it has been a breath of fresh air for the cultural scene in the Balearic Island: first, the companies from the Balearic Islands have a venue which will support them while they develop their creations; moreover, the C.IN.E.'s activity has revitalized the cultural offer in Sineu and, by extensions, in Mallorca. We'd also like to highlight that thanks to the work carried out by the C.IN.E., Mallorcan creators have been able to connect to international research centres, where they have learned about and shared ideas, methods and projects with artists from around the world.

Why this is important

The C.IN.E. works to support artists and companies, as well as boosting exchange between artists and the local community.

The C.IN.E.'s ethos has always featured ’opening creative processes to the community. Resident companies are invited to offer open sessions, which are always free of charge, followed by a discussion where opinions, questions and reflections are exchanged on the works in progress.

We put ourselves at the service of the artists and companies, but we also act as mediators with the community. In a nutshell, we strive to disseminate the singularity of creation: what creators are faced with, how they work, which doubts they have, what they reflect on, what their weaknesses and strengths are.

The project is thus addressed to every one who is interested in performing arts, to any extent of participation, and to those who believe in culture as a point of meeting, growth and dialogue.

Team and experience

The C.IN.E. is run by the association ALCEM EL C.IN.E.

The masterminds and artistic directors are Biel Jordà and Marta Barceló. Neus Ribas is the project manager and Estela M. Fernández is the communications manager.

Biel Jordà and Marta Barceló, both holding a degree in Performing Arts from the Institut del Teatre (Barcelona), are the cofounders of the production company Res de Res i En Blanc, with which they have travelled all around the world with shows such as Ícars, Tempo, Abans que arribi l'alemany or (remor). After twenty years running the company, creating one show after another, they decided to close the company and focus their efforts on the C.IN.E. project.

Biel Jordà is, also, a theatre director and acting teacher at the Performing Arts School of the Balearic Islands, and holds a master's degree in performing arts advanced studies from UNIR. He is currently writing the script for the film Through Your Eyes with Toni Sastre, thanks to a grant from IEB, and directs the shows Téntol by the Mallorcan company Manipulats and TearAway by the Belgian company Breaked.

Marta Barceló is, also, a playwright and has written texts as well-known as Abans que arribi l’alemany (winner of the dramaturgy competition of the Balearic Islands, ATAPIB award for best text), Tocar mare (winner of the dramaturgy competition in Girona and the Transatlantic competition in Buenos Aires, and premiered and published in Greece), and Anar a Saturn i tornar (Palanca i Roca- Ciutat d’Alzira award). Moreover, she is a screenwriter in fiction shows on IB3 (Pep, Treufoc, Hotel Bellavista, Migjorn, L’anell….)

Neus Ribas is a cultural manager and translator with extensive experience in internationalisation of culture, BA in Translation and Interpreting at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and holds a postgraduate degree in event management at the UOC. For 10 years she worked in Barcelona in the translation industry, and she specialised in cultural projects, such as exhibition catalogues, reports on architectural restoration and opening of CaixaForum Barcelona and CaixaForum Madrid, etc.

Between 2010 and 2020 she worked in cultural management in the public sector, her area of expertise being international promotion of culture, where she carried out projects encompassing several artistic expressions: Be Balears programme in New York (2010), exhibition Chopin as Seen Through the Eyes of Young Artists from the Balearic Islands in London and Warsaw (2011), exchanges with Instituto Cervantes in Munich and Prague (2012), organisation of the accompanying activities for the XIV Campus de la Llengua Catalana (2012), coordination of showcase events Sea Arts (2013), Sea Music (2014) and the music and performing arts market Fira B! (2015-2019), among others.

Estela M. Fernández is a cultural manager and journalist, BA in Journalism and Humanities at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She has alway been linked to projects which combine communication and culture, she coordinated the Communication Department in Casa Àsia (Barcelona) for seven years.
When she was settled in Mallorca, she switched from off to online and cofounded the communications agency Esfera Comunicación. After a period working as a freelance, she immersed herself in performing arts and circus.
In 2015 she committed herself to the project of recuperation the former Sineu cinema in order to host the C.IN.E. She is currently its communications manager and has started a professional project as a freelance. She is also part of the Ciclop and Circaire festival teams.
