Del laboratorio al mundo... y vuelta

Desde que, meses atrás, la semilla de este proyecto comenzó a germinar, la necesidad de realizar una investigación en el terreno se hizo evidente. En el laboratorio podemos recrear unas ciertas condiciones de trabajo, pero ¿cómo saber si nuestra visión del problema del cólera se ajusta a la realidad? Sin información de primera mano, debíamos remitirnos a terceros; a artículos y estadísticas que, si bien han sido tremendamente valiosas para el desarrollo de nuestra tecnología, se revelan escasas a la hora de transmitir algo de vital importancia: la perspectiva local.

Al volver de Camerún hemos traído con nosotros algo más que una serie de datos sobre las infraestructuras, protocolos, condiciones ambientales y formación profesional. Hemos tenido el privilegio de poder charlar frente a frente con científicos y trabajadores sanitarios, y éstos nos han sabido transmitir la mejor manera de llevar a cabo nuestro cometido. Junto con estas increíbles personas hemos podido definir nuestro foco de actuación al conocer las necesidades reales existentes (un diagnóstico rápido, enfocado a pequeñas clínicas locales) y los problemas a los que tendremos que hacer frente (urbanización descontrolada, cortes de electricidad, infravaloración del riesgo del agua, etc.).

Por si esto fuera poco, la realización de talleres de capacitación con personal local cualificado nos ha permitido obtener un feedback muy relevante a la hora de comparar los métodos de detección existentes con la nueva tecnología que estamos desarrollando, para aprovechar sus fortalezas y mejorar sus puntos débiles. Hemos podido confirmar de primera mano la relevancia y la pertinencia de nuestra investigación. Y, lo que es más, hemos podido vivir en nuestras carnes las dificultades a las que se enfrentan los científicos que desarrollan su investigación en zonas de pocos recursos.

Además de haber recopilado conocimientos que nos ayudarán a que nuestro proyecto sea efectivo, para nosotros ha supuesto abrir los ojos a la realidad de lo que es un país en vías de desarrollo. Un lugar en el que las personas, si bien se tienen que enfrentar a dificultades que en Occidente no tenemos, no dejan de ser emprendedores, profesionales cualificados que buscan salir adelante, trabajar y mejorar sus condiciones de vida. Exactamente igual que hacemos en nuestra parte del mundo.

África nos ha demostrado que nuestro proyecto es viable. Es posible salvar vidas y hacer del planeta un lugar un poquito más justo y mejor así que... ¡manos a la obra!
