General information

  • "Football is all about people. I don't understand football without enthusiastic fans, and sometimes irrationally: they suffer, they celebrate, and they live for their clubs. Football generates that passion, but people can start losing it, for example, when you talk about huge amounts of money. Without people, football has no path", Juan Mata

In September 2015, after the most inclusive process in the history of the United Nations, 17 Global Goals (SDGs) were adopted to end poverty, protect our planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

Today, four years after the agreement, our progress has been far from promising. Recent data shows that little progress has been made. What is more, some of the indicators are even declining.

Nevertheless, we can still change our current situation. We have 10 years until we reach the target. If we genuinely wish to tackle the greatest challenges of our time and achieve the goals we set for ourselves as a society by 2030, we can only do so in one way: by working together as a team.

Football has a unique potential to bring people together. With more than 3.5 billion football fans on our planet, it is a unique phenomenon that unites more than half of the world's population. So, let us harness the power of football along with its universal language and the passion it generates to build the world's biggest team. A team capable of facing the greatest challenges of our time.

In order to build this team, the Common Goal movement was launched in 2017. Led and driven by world-class professionals such as Juan Mata, Megan Rapinoe and Jürgen Klopp, Common Goal aims to unite the world of football in order to support the Sustainable Development Goals and promote a more equitable and sustainable world.

Through this campaign, Aficiones Unidas calls on all football fans to join the biggest social movement in the football world: supporting Common Goal and its project "Global Goal 5 Accelerator" which will be launched in December 2019 to promote gender equality through football and after it’s launch it will also receive donations from Common Goal players.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

ABOUT THE COMMON GOAL MOVEMENT

The idea is simple: to allocate 1% of the revenue generated by the global football industry to social impact. According to the recent estimated value of the global football industry, it is worth 50 billion Euros per year, this would mean allocating 500 million Euros each year towards supporting initiatives that use football to achieve the Global Goals.

The Common Goal movement has already taken the first step, with more than 140 professional footballers, professional football club FC Nordsjaelland and UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, among others, pledging 1% of their earnings and raising €1.5 million for initiatives and organisations that use football as a tool for social change in just two years.

With the concept successfully proven, the challenge for Common Goal now is to spread the movement by bringing more players and organisations together to generate more resources for the initiatives around the world that use football as a tool for social change.

Together, we can all ensure that 1% will be set as a philanthropic standard across the football industry.

ABOUT THE GOAL 5 ACCELERATOR PROJECT

Today there are more than 600 million girls in the world today. Every one of those girls has the potential to lead – herself, her peers and her community. However, gender inequity and discrimination are deeply entrenched and widely tolerated throughout the world. Living as an adolescent girl in much of the world means facing the life- changing realities of early marriage, premature pregnancy, denial of education (especially secondary school), social isolation, female genital mutilation and other forms of gender- based violence.

Football for development programs are an effective platform to meaningfully contribute to Global Goal 5 around (1) advancing leadership (2) ending discrimination, gender-based violence, and exploitation, (3) accessing reproductive health and rights, and (4) promoting policy changes to enforce equal rights at the community, national, and global level.

To achieve these goals it is necessary to allocate resources for the development and implementation of gender equality programmes in the field of football for development. So far, investment has been heavily focussed on research, programming and the pooling of ideas.

The "Global Goal 5 Accelerator" project initiated by Common Goal in cooperation with [Soccer Without Borders] (https://wwww.soccerwithoutborderd.org/) and [Women Win] (http://www.womenwin.org/homepage) (leading organisations in the implementation of gender equality programmes through football) aims to collect all data and previous research on the topic of female empowerment through football to create a concrete and effective action plan.

The project will involve organizations that have experience in the field and the capacity to implement the programmes that will be developed through this project. These organisations will be given guidelines, work methodologies and resources within the framework of the monitoring process.

These are some of the NGOs that will be part:

The project will be divided into the following work fields:

  • On the field: Concrete strategies for engaging and retaining girls in the programmes. Training on how to gain the permission and support from parents and guardians in the regions where gender inequality exists. Training to ensure that girls feel empowered and confident both on and off the playing field.

  • Off the field: Strategies to identify, support and train female coaches and role models to develop their capacities. It will also include the access to female role models in organisations that do not have access to these influential people through Common Goal

  • Organisations: Identifying and training young leaders within the organisations to focus on gender equality, as well as ensuring that they have specific objectives and milestones for their work in this area. This field of work also includes supporting these young leaders to identify internal barriers within the organisations in order to create a strategy to reduce and eliminate these barriers.

Media: Strategies for identifying influential people within each organization and each community to engage in dialogue and raise awareness about gender equality in the regions where organizations work.

Phases of the project:

  • Design phases: Each of the 12 NGOs will send 2 - 3 leaders (minimum 1 female leader) to the 4-day project design sessions at the headquarters of Soccer Without Borders in Uganda. In the sessions, they will learn about existing strategies for women's empowerment through football, and tailor-made strategies will be designed for each organisation, including a monitoring plan to be carried out by Women Win. Common objectives will also be designed for each field of work.

  • Implementation phase: The implementation phase is the main feature of this project. The initial phase will last 10 months, which is enough time to adjust strategies, monitor progress and address emerging issues.

  • Impact Measurement Phase: Soccer Without Borders and Women Win will support the entire impact measurement process by holding monthly meetings and visiting organisations. The criteria will be an increase in the number of girls participating in the programmes, an increase in the number of female trainers and the opportunities identified and promoted for women (the numerical objectives will be established during the design phase).

HOW WILL THE FUNDS RAISED BY THIS CAMPAIGN BE ALLOCATED?

The funds raised by this campaign will be channelled to the initiatives described below:

  • Support the growth of Common Goal. What does this mean? Support the tasks of player acquisition, evaluation and selection of projects and organizations and expansion of the movement. All this is done in order to ensure that more resources are allocated to high social impact initiatives and work to ensure that 1% becomes a philanthropic standard for the global football industry.

  • Fund the implementation of the “Goal 5 Accelerator” project, also supported by Common Goal members. By obtaining the fundraiser minimum, the project will be carried out in East Africa. By obtaining the fundraiser optimum, the project will also be carried out in Central America as well.

Why this is important

Aficiones Unidas (AFEPE) is an association founded by several Spanish football club presidents to unite their efforts for the promotion of beautiful, non-violent and fair football, which serves as a driving force for friendship and harmony among football fans.

A note from Aficiones Unidas:

Aficiones Unidas is an official member of Common Goal. We dedicate 1% of our revenue to developing social projects because we believe that teamwork is essential to achieve great changes. We would like to extend our commitment far beyond the 1% donation, which is why we decided to organise this Christmas campaign to support Common Goal and the project that promotes gender equality through football.

Footballers, coaches and organisations in the world of football are already committed to our cause and invest their time and resources in improving the world. Therefore, we believe it is time for football fans and supporters to join to continue this commitment and expand the movement.

  • The first objective of this campaign is to support the internal structure of Common Goal, because we want it to help grow the movement as sustainably as possible and maximise its potential for social impact.

  • The second objective of this campaign is to support gender equality, which we believe should be the key focus in ending 2019. This year, women's football has made a significant and dramatic step forward in terms of visibility, media presence and backing from football stakeholders. Aficiones Unidas believes that this should only be the beginning, and we have to continue working and fighting so that women have equal opportunities both in the football industry and in society.
