Plàstic Preciós La Safor we are a non-profit organization that tries to reduce the enormous negative impact that as a human being we are causing on our planet, and to contribute our grain of sand against this environmental disaster.
As long as it lasts, sooner or later we will leave behind the current crisis of the covid19, however unfortunately the climatic and social crisis that we have been experiencing for years will continue to grow and leading us to a structurally violent, unbalanced and unsustainable world. Caring for our planet to maintain biodiversity is the solution to protect ourselves from these infections of animal origin.
So even if it is hard to believe, it is in our hands to be able to change this situation, as individuals we can decide. When we buy a product from a company that is polluting our planet or not respecting the rights of its workers, we are voting to this company, and therefore supporting its bad practices. If we continue buying those products, they will continue selling them, if we stop doing so they will have to make them more sustainable. **
But we also believe that we can do more when we come together and make community. That is why we decided to create an environmental association with which we are dedicated to transforming plastic waste into objects with a new useful life and raising awareness about the importance of making responsible use of it.
We also carry out workshops in educational centers, fairs, companies and events showing the plastic recycling process on site , which has a great impact on the people attending, since they can see the complete process of crushing their own waste plastic and take an object created with it.
So, with this project we want:
- Transform plastic waste from the local community into useful objects for it.
- Empower young people at risk of exclusion giving them the necessary skills to develop their own projects on waste transformation.
- Raise awareness about the importance of making responsible use of plastic.
- Reduce the amount of plastic waste that is generated and give a new life to the existing one.
- Create a local plastic waste management model exportable to other regions as an example of good practice.
- Promote the circular economy and the transformation of waste.
- Integrate the transformation of plastic waste in the educational environment.
Currently, we are recycling to the maximum of our capacity, since our machines are limited by the size of the objects we can produce and the production time we need, that's why we want to step forward and build some machines more efficient to transform larger amounts of plastic and create new, larger objects with a longer lifespan.
In case of obtaining the minimum financing, our priorities are:
- More efficient, larger, and more powerful industrial shredder for shredding larger amounts of plastic in less time and larger parts.
- More efficient and robust injector that allows us to transform larger amounts of plastic waste more quickly.
- Extruder that will allow us to make different plastic profiles which can then be used to make furniture, fences, compost ...
As we arrive at the optimal financing, the actions to follow in order of priority will be:
- Laser cutting machine to shape many objects from 100% recycled plastic plates.
- Heat press that will allow us to make 100% recycled plastic boards of up to 2 x 1.5 m with different thicknesses which have many applications such as making benches, tables, shelves ...
- Machinery to recycle the aluminum ourselves, which we will then machine to make the molds for the injector, and thus we will be able to close the recycling circle, and be able to supply our raw material needs 100% with recycled elements.
- CNC milling machine to machine the molds we need to create new objects, and to shape many objects from 100% recycled plastic plates.
- Miter saw for working with 100% recycled plastic profiles.
In short, with these new machines we will be able to more effectively transform greater amounts of plastic waste and manufacture larger objects. As well as creating a local plastic waste management space open to the public, where people can bring their waste and see on site how we grind and transform it.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
Our philosophy is to value plastic as the light, resistant and highly durable material that it is, stopping using single-use plastics that usually have a very short useful life compared to the many years that they take to degrade.
Thus we take advantage of the characteristics of plastic to create objects with a very long useful life, since this type of plastic can be recycled in an unlimited way. All our products can be recycled and transformed into new objects so that they never end up in nature turned into waste with the terrible consequences that this entails.
Why this is important
Unfortunately we are tired of seeing places in Nature like mountains, beaches, rivers or lakes full of plastic waste.
There is no doubt that something does not work well, a very small amount of the plastic consumed is recycled (less than 9%), and with current consumption habits we generate tons of plastics a year that end up damaging our planet.
We should drastically reduce the amount of plastic we generate, and recycle 100% of what we consume.
One of the main problems of plastic is the misuse that we make of it. We are treating it as an infinite and non-polluting material, however most of the plastic we consume comes from oil, which is a finite resource, and it is also a very polluting material when it becomes waste. Therefore, we have to crush it in order to transform it back into raw material.
Our motivation is to be able to create a 100% efficient plastic recycling model, local and transferable to other places, that allows us to manage plastic waste locally, returning it to the community in the form of new objects.
Many people wonder: what happens to the plastic once we throw it in the yellow container?
We also, that is why we propose a transparent process open to the public where you can see the entire plastic recycling process since it is collected, selected, crushed, transformed and comes out as a new product. Thus, the benefits of the plastic recycling business remain in the local communities and do not go to large multinationals as they do today.
Therefore, we propose a sustainable alternative to the management of plastic waste with a local model covering the needs of each territory and that can be exported to other regions as an example of good practice.
It is necessary to leave the linear economy of buying, using and throwing away, and to move towards a sustainable system with the circular economy following the "R" model.
With this project we focus on Reduce, Reflect, Reuse and Recycle; although we consider that all of them are equally important, that is why we also encourage Reject single-use plastics or products that are not recyclable, as well as companies or products that deliberately harm the environment, Claim that companies Residen their products and production processes avoiding unnecessary packaging, and Repair whenever possible , avoiding products with programmed obsolescence or of very poor quality that cannot be repaired.
Thus, we want to create objects that society can benefit from (banks, litter bins, signage, compost ...) adapted to each local community, using the same plastic waste to manufacture their urban furniture or cover their community needs.
As an example, when the coronavirus crisis began we designed a protective screen model (EPIs) for public and health sector personnel that we have been manufacturing and donating to different health and public centers since the virus appeared. More info: https://plasticprecioslasafor.org/opcovid19/
Furthermore, our intention is for this project to be sustainable in the near future, and to be able to create a job placement plan for people with fewer opportunities, at risk of exclusion and in general for young people with no motivation to study or work. In this way we could cover the occupational needs of young people who do not find their work space in our current system, providing them with key competences for their personal and professional future that will help them to develop their own environmental entrepreneurship projects through transformation. of plastic waste. This type of project has the great advantage that the raw material we use is the same waste that we generate as a company, therefore it does not require a large initial investment or especially technical knowledge.
These are some of the products we have created so far:
A few years ago we saw the promotional video of the Precious Plastic project, and we decided to build the machines and join the Global community. In December 2016 we obtained financing to set up our small plastic recycling and transformation plant in Gandia.
Luckily, the councilor for the environment of the City of Gandia at the time, Xavi Rodenas, believed in the project and gave us a space to develop it. So, we built all four machines and started experimenting with them.
Our machines are small and manageable, so we can show the plastic waste recycling process on-site, hence one of our main activities is awareness workshops.
We have been in educational centers in different areas of Spain making known in a practical way the importance of plastic recycling and the need to change the current model towards a more sustainable one, such as the circular economy.
We have also participated in fairs and events such as the Climate Summit 2020 COP25 (Madrid), Parkingday (Barcelona), Juvenalia (Madrid), Bio Fira (Gandia), Eco Fira (València) or festivals such as the Posidonia Green Festival (Barcelona), RRRR Fest, Art i Reciclatge (Gandía) or Own Spirit (Huesca).
In addition, we have appeared in newspapers such as Levante and televisions such as Antena3 or A Punt (Valencian regional television).
Our personal experiences are very diverse, we have organized and participated in cleaning days for beaches, mountains and other natural spaces. Since 2014 we have also organized volunteer and non-formal education projects through the Erasmus + Youth, Young Entrepreneurs and the European Solidarity Corps. Mainly on environmental issues, environmental entrepreneurship with waste transformation, bio-construction but also personal and professional development.
We each have experience in different fields such as the social and cultural field, volunteering, non-formal education, upcycling, industrial engineering, computer science, or entrepreneurship. This diverse merger has generated a strong team with which we have managed to make our dream come true and carry out different initiatives and projects.
We also collaborate with associations around the world, from Nepal to Mexico, where we have carried out environmental volunteer projects and awareness.
In 2019 we were invited to the World Climate Summit in Madrid to share our experience as managers of environmental volunteer projects in Spain.
