General information

SocialForest is a social enterprise dedicated to forest management and the carrying out of forestry work. Our main focus lies in the training and social integration of unemployed youngsters at risk of social exclusion. We offer forestry services for both private and public institutions in Catalonia and Germany. A sustainable vision of forestry and a collaborative and social conception of vocational training, are key factors of SocialForest’s mission.

The initiative’s origin lies in the approach to use sustainable forestry as a tool for social inclusion. Furthermore, SocialForest is driven by making every effort to support clean and cheap energy while at the same time protecting nature and the environment. We aim to establish a culture of forestry in society and to make people aware of the woods’ great value as a natural resource, energy source and weapon in the fight against climate change.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

The Social Forest project started in 2014. Our main objective, as a social enterprise, is the reinsertion and training of young people at risk of social exclusion. We want to achieve this through our company core value: forest protection. We train young people so they can have a job as a forestry worker. Therefore we bring young people into the forest where we not only help them to develop professionally, but also personally.
Thus our focus is summarised in three main parts:
1. Training and social insertion of young people at risk of social exclusion or those who are unemployed.
2. Sustainable forest management and maintenance of the Catalan forests.
3. Environmental protection and the sharing of knowledge about the forests’ value for society. We want to reconnect people with nature and in particular with forests.
We have created the concept of Forest Coaching through which we can combine these 3 areas of action and create social impact. We use the forests as a classroom, as it offers a unique and very favourable environment for learning, studying, and development. We care about professional training as well as personal growth and that young people develop a positive attitude towards themselves.

Why this is important

Our project is aimed at young people at risk of social exclusion. The youth unemployment rate is 59% for young people between the ages of 16 and 19 and 33.6% for young people aged 20-24 in Catalonia. The dropout rate in Catalonia is worrisomely high at 18.9%. These factors increase the risk that these young people are excluded from the world of work. That is why Social Forest believes that we must help these young people to offer them a stable future and to play an active role in our society. We also believe it is very positive to take young people to the forests, a more tranquil world, where they are given the opportunity to find themselves and their way of life. In a natural and relaxed atmosphere you can focus and develop a positive attitude towards your work and personal life.

We also believe that there is a lack of connection between society and nature, especially forests. We want to make people more sensitive to the great value of forests and the environment. Furthermore, we want to raise awareness of forestry work.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Through the Crowdfunding campaign we want to drive forward our project. We want to invest in new machinery to be able to take on more forestry projects, which will enable us to train more young people at risk of social exclusion and even give us the possibility of hiring them after the training finishes. With your help we can increase our social impact. The goal is to hire them ourselves or find them a job in a forestry company, so that they can work as a forester and continue to improve their forestry knowledge and skills. Creating job opportunities is only possible if we have enough forestry projects, though to carry them out, we need to invest in new machinery.

So far we have trained 73 young people at risk of social exclusion, we have employed 21 people over the years, and we have collaborated on 110 forestry projects.

Team and experience

The initiative began in 2014 after winning the Entrepreneurship Award from the Foundation Obra Social de la Caixa. There are currently 8 people working at Social Forest. The technical team consists of two forestry engineers, one pedagogue and four young people working in the woods. We collaborate with different entities of the third sector and the forestry sector. Currently, we have 3 vehicles and the right machinery to carry out forestry work such as reforestation, clearing and maintenance and opening firewalls.
