Base fabric of the cartography
“El Gran Textil” has a base fabric, where the cartography will be patterned and sewn. This fabric is special, it is flame retardant, resistant, waterproof and lightweight. Tecnodimension Hinchable SL, the company that provides us with the material has machines that draw the patterns we use as a guide for sewing.
The 120m2 base is divided into 30 parts to work, these pieces will then be reassembled and reinforced throughout the perimeter, as well as the necessary traces to be exposed and hung. As its name says is “The Base”, the foundation of the work.

General information
LaPlasita through its project ComoArte builds “El Gran Textil”
ComoArte, the line of socio-cultural and educational innovation of "LaPlasita" collective, is building, together with the pattern and fashion students at the Pablo Picasso vocational education school in Seville, a 120m2 textile artistic piece: “El Gran Textil”. This work consists of a sewn cartography of the metropolitan area of Seville from a perspective of food in cities. Also, the relationship between Seville and Reims is represented.
We consider that art is a good mediator to raise awareness, educate and propose the necessary changes in our habits that help fight climate change. By building, designing, researching and in this case, sewing and weaving we will be able to influence these issues. “El Gran Textil” promotes critical thinking through activities included in teaching environments with educational objectives.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
What is the “El Gran Textil”?
-
A cartography of the metropolis of Seville (1,133 km2) and its relationship with the city of Reims sewn with recycled fabrics on a 120m2 canvas.
-
A teaching innovation project with art as a mediator. The creation of the art piece is being carried out, from the direction of LaPLasita, through a teaching innovation project based on "Learning by doing" projects. The objectives of these workshops are to promote teamwork, creativity, critical thinking and propose new habits that help fight climate change.
-
A collective construction. It involves the middle and higher levels of the Patronage and Fashion course of the IES Pablo Picasso of Seville. Much of the piece is done through creative workshops in this vocational education school. Other teaching and social institutions are also collaborating.
-
An eutopic representation. A realizable utopia that has wondered "How to improve the diet of one million two hundred thousand people taking care of the planet?"
Where and how?
The construction of the cartography began in May 2019 and will conclude at the end of 2021 as it’s a living work in constant evolution in which the different agents and participants are designing the work. We aim to be present in the following spaces and countries:
-
March 2020: “El Gran Textil” "work in progress" will be exhibited in Seville on March 5 at the Carmen Aranguren gallery.
-
June 2020: It will be exhibited in the market of Reims (France) in honor of the shape of “El Gran Textil” that matches the window of the market.
-
November 2020: The work will be exhibited in Seville in an event organized with the City Council of Seville at the end of 2020.

Why this is important
In the coming years, more than 70% of the world population will live in cities.
We must act and think about how cities, metropolises, and megacities will be fed while being responsible, sustainable and caring for the planet. This is ComoArte's approach and through works and socio-cultural projects, we are acting, sensitizing and proposing new eating habits and how cities can be fed.
“El Gran Textil” is the art piece with which we are acting and thinking in the metropolitan area of Seville.
One million two hundred thousand people feed in Seville and through projects of this type we can provide new solutions that improve our quality of life. “El Gran Textil”, in addition to being an artistic work, is a participatory and critical investigation of the urban and territorial landscape from the perspective of food in cities.
Impact of this project:
-
The metropolitan area of Seville is the beneficiary of this work.
-
The rulers and city councils of the more than 30 municipalities involved in the cartography with which informative conferences will be organized.
-
People from associations that are participating in the collective construction, as well as students who are collaborating in the creation, through a teaching innovation project:
-The 50 students of the Pablo Picasso vocational education school in Seville.
-The associations of disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city of Reims where we will work in May 2020.
-The future participants of the cities where the project is developed.

Team and experience
LaPlasita has been performing artistic activities and working with culture for more than 20 years. His studio founded in 1999 has two production lines, one dedicated to architecture and another to cultural projects, for this last activity the cultural association of the same name has been created.
From the cultural proposals, the ComoArte project is born, which from art and education perspective proposes new ways of approaching the territories and food. Art as a mediator goes through all projects, all actions.
These other actions have been carried out in recent years:
- La Noche Naranja (December 2019). Promoter: Seville City Council.
- Las Rutas de la Remezcla (April 2018). Promoter: Anthropoloos & LaPlasita.
- El Jardín Cosmopolita (December 2018). Promoter: Nomad Garden.

- Exhibition at the Valentín de Madariaga Seville Foundation (September 2017). Promoter: LaPlasita.

Social commitment

Educational
ComoArte is a teaching innovation project that aims to raise awareness about food in cities and the incidence of eating habits in climate change, as well as training in transversal skills such as creativity and critical thinking, using art as a mediator.
“El Gran Textil” is a textile art piece that represents a food mapping and that together with its participatory process of collective creation is another experience of the ComoArte project.
The ComoArte project aims to raise awareness about eating habits, fight hunger, improve people's quality of life and take care of the planet. Promoting reflection on food in cities seeks to change production and consumption habits around food.
