General information

La Casa Invisible (The Invisible House) is a cultural and social centre under citizen's management. It opened in 2007 after the recovery of an abandoned building owned by the council of Málaga (Spain). Since, we have become one of the cultural lungs of the city, where critical thinking is constructed collectivelly.
The acquired legitimacy and the intense work developed in defence of this space has been acknowledged, not only when we avoided its eviction in 2009, but with its recognition as a general interest project in 2011 through the the signing of a cession agreement for a year period with the City Council of Málaga, as well as the Provincial Council of Málaga, the Regional Board of Andalusia and the Reina Sofía Museum. Once this period finished, La Casa Invisible had accomplished its compromise, the City Council was obliged to sign a stable cession in use. Nevertheless, this did not happen as the Council blocks this agreement since 2012. Nowadays this agreement has not been signed yet, as the Council does not follow the compromise, even if the administrative reports were favourable.

The Council denies to meet La Casa Invisible, and they block the works required to restore the building integrally, yet, remarkable works on refurbishing have been done.

Surpisingly, last Dec 23rd 2014, the Council, through the Local Police closed La Casa Invisible down, excusing themselves in a technical report of the City Planning Dept. that did not order that measure, but the cease of 'free movement' activities until several refurbishing works were performed. La Invisible was working in cooperation with the Preservation Section of City Planning. In reality, this is a political decision in order to force a unique experience in Málaga where free culture and independent initiatives take place, as well as many of the most active and critical social movements.

Along with the politics of cultural management of the conservative People's Party, the Council fo Málaga has not fulfilled their obligations of preservation as legal owners of the building and they set difficulties for the Invisible community to do so, thus, the apparent intention of suffocating its activities in the building. Thus, we are going to do this IN COOPERATION in order to do these interventions possible, so La Casa Invisible continues louder and more active than ever.

We really need your support in order to defend this citizen's project so we can last for many years.

The Government wants La Invisible closed down.
The citizens want us to continue.
We will follow the will of the citizenship ;)

LA INVISIBLE WILL BE DEFENDED!

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

La Invisible takes place in a historical building of the late 19th century. Our headquarters enjoy good structural conditions thanks to the resoration project performed by hundreds of volunteers.

In order to follow the new safety regulations we need to follow costly works:

  • Purchase and intallation of protection elements and fire safety, such as fire doors.
  • To adequate the electrical installation to the current normative.

La Invisible is a project that seeks sustainability and ecology. We leave a fifth phase open for a future project in order to install photovolcaic panels and batteries.

Why this is important

The project targets all citizens, creatives and similar collectives around the globe.
La Invisible is a space that hosts hundreds of artistic events freely, as well as creative space and a meeting point for movements and collectives.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The objective is to raise a quantity that we cannot obtain in any other way in order to be able to reopen for the public and allow La Invisible free for all.

La Invisible does not receive funds nor subsidies from governamental organisations.
Only the people can defend the people and we need, this time, your economical support.

The basic objective is to raise, initiall, €10,000 that would allow us to:

  • By fire doors for the ground floor, which is focused for open-to-all activities, following the normative in fire safety.
  • To purchase the electrical equipment required to adapt the facilities to the current normative in a first phase of execution, in relation with two spaces of the ground floor.

If an optimal €20,000 is raised, we can also:

  • Purchase the electrical equipment in order to adapt the following phases of execution of the electrical equipment related to the first and second floor.

Team and experience

La Casa Invisible is a Social and Cultural Centre of Citizen Management born in March 2007 when a wide network of citizens, neighbours and artists decided to make bloom an abandoned historical building owned by the Council of Málaga.

The objectives that we set in 2007 were clear and we continue working in that direction:
:: To promote social self-management processes that may strengthen networks and social movements working on social justice.
:: To create an experimental lab managed by local artists based on the principles of co-operation, collaborative production and free culture.
:: To organise educational projects in several scopes (social sciences, politics, technology, arts, etc.) in order to promote critical thinking, citizen empowerment, social creativity and collective action.
:: To experiment models of citizen management of common equipment and goods, in order to promote a democratic radicalisation based on equity and direct participation on public politics.

Thanks to the intense co-operation, intelligence and generosity of thousands of anonymous citizens, we are sure that this first seven-year period of La Casa Invisible has achieved its role as an important space in Málaga and the rest of the Spanish State.

The vitality of our building in Nosquera St. relies on thousands of sociocultural proposals (musical scenes, artists, social movements, hackers, neighbours, migrants, collectives, children, etc) that are a good example of the richness and power that was previously hidden in our city. La Invisible is more than a building, but an equipment that is based on co-operation and blending of prjoects, initiatives and ideas that emerge and are proposed from citizenship. The pulse and vitality of this project depends in our intensity and the extension of the co-operation we can create.

Obviously, errors are frequent in this kind of citizen experiences and we consider them part of the institutional testing of alternative ways of management. We understand commons management as a democratic pedagogy under permanent construction.

The experience of La Casa Invisible during these (nearly) 8 years has been a successful demonstration of the power and creativity citizens are able to develop when they co-operate and they have equipment and tools managed for the common-wealth.

And the story goes on… ;)
