General information
FACIL, pour l'appropriation collective de l'informatique libre (FACIL), a Quebec-based non-profit, has decided to develop and produce a 16 GB USB key bearing the FACIL logo and capable of booting from a selection of free-software operating systems (such as GNU/Linux and BSD) on a large set of target computers. The FACIL key will serve to propagate free software on the computers of ordinary Quebecers all the while providing FACIL with a better source of financing than only selling T-shirts and stickers.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
The project first consists in developing the prototype of a 16 GB USB key capable of booting different free-software operating systems. The key will be developed using, MultiSystem, an excellent free software application designed to do just that. MultiSystem will have to be modified to allow booting on computers with either a classic BIOS or the more recent UEFI.
The next step will be to mass duplicate the USB key image on good quality devices that will bear the FACIL logo. We have already identified Quebec-based companies that are in this trade.
Why this is important
The project will have at least three positive impacts on society:

The FACIL key will serve to directly distribute the free-software alternative on the computers of ordinary Quebecers.

FACIL is a non-profit and finding ways to finance its activities is one of its main challenges. The FACIL key will be a good alternative source of financing. Of course financing FACIL means allowing this non-profit organization to better promote free software, data, culture, hardware, etc., to the general public.

Adding UEFI support in MultiSystem will benefit to all users of this excellent application, whose purpose is precisely to make it easy to produce USB keys capable of booting from a selection of different operating system.
Goals of the crowdfunding campaign
Our primary objective is to distribute the maximum amount of FACIL keys to democratize free-software operating systems using a means that will also help to raise awareness of our organization. Simply put, we wish to quickly distribute all our production and start a new one!
Also, the project will be useful to FACIL as a way to experiment with crowdfunding : this is our first time and we have chosen the Goteo platform.
FACIL has been promoting free computing in Quebec for the past 10 years.
