We are a group of 45 students from the Carlos III University of Madrid from different branches such as industrial technologies, electronic, mechanical, computer, telecommunications, aerospace, sociology, journalism and media communication, working in the same project: design and build a vehicle that allows the Carlos III University of Madrid participate in the Formula Student event.
The Formula Student is an international competition in which students from different universities and countries, design, build and compete with a powerful car with technical and economic constraints. The competition consists of several events like endurance, acceleration, performance, reliability and fuel consumption of the car, all turns in a good analysis and study of the car, and in which a special effort to ensure the car safety.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
What is Formula Student? It’s a student competition which encompasses different universities around the world, in order to promote talent, creativity and imagination.
How did this project come out? The Formula UC3M project was established as an initiative of students and teachers three years ago, and now days about fifty members of different specialties are involved in designing a car for the Formula Student competition.
What is our goal? To design and manufacture a Formula Student single-seat that would be able to achieve the best positions in the different tests that’ll be submitted. Considering that safety and fidelity are our most important priorities.
At what stage of the project are we? We have almost finished with the design phase. But we need funding support to go through the fabrication and construction process.
Who already assist us? Our project is supported by the Carlos III University of Madrid, and “Solidworks”, a company that provides us with the necessary designing software. Nonetheless we need your contributions in order to achieve our goal.
Why this is important
The Formula UC3M team is a group of students and professors of the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, in which different disciplines of the university unite for one purpose, the creation of a motorsport team, where knowledge, learning, competition and cars work together.
It is a project that is aimed at anyone who likes the competition and innovation because Formula Student is the contest where future engineers are trained for developing new technologies in the next years.
Goals of the crowdfunding campaign
Our aims are the manufacturing of the car, which will participate in the Formula Student competition together with other international teams, and carry out tests in the designs we are performing to improve the behavior and security of our vehicles.
The team was founded in 2012 among engineering students in order to build a vehicle as a way to challenge themselves. Currently we are more than 40 students from different branches and specialties .There have been involved about 80 people between students and teachers since its creation. This has led to the development of several thesis graduations that consisted in design the different parts of our car.
Among the students participating in the project we can find degrees of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Science as Guillermo Nunez, mechanical engineering student, machining and production operator and technical commissioner of Jarama from 7 years where he has assisted events at regional, national and global levels.
Butour project is transverse and multidisciplinary with many other degrees that are not related to scientific and technological areas such as journalism, economics, audiovisual communication or law degrees. They provide vital support to the project, making all kinds of tasks.
Among the teachers who coordinate and advise future engineers in the design of the vehicle are Dr. Daniel García-Pozuelo professor of mechanical engineering with publications and thesis in the automotive field, specifically in the vehicle dynamics and safety. Also actively involved in projects with international universities as "University of Birmingham".
In addition, our former team members become consultants and mentor the next generation of engineers such as Jorge Vega, mechanical engineer with professional experience in Formula 3.
Until now, the students have achieved recognition and appointment as official team of University Carlos III of Madrid to compete in the international competition of Formula Student.
