General information

Given the recent charges filed against various residents of this village, including accusations that may even lead to jail time, we are trying to find a legal framework that fits our way of living and building.
We believe it is necessary for us as well as for other similar initiatives and for families or individuals who are considering this option of lifestyle in the future.
We hope to raise financial aid for the legal journey on which we are embarking.
Thanks to everyone for your support.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

El Calabacino is a village located in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park, province of Huelva. Since the late 1970s ,people from different parts of Spain and all over the world, have been gradually repopulating this village, looking for a new way of life more in tune with nature and leaving behind urban saturation.
The number of inhabitants is now nearly what it was in the original village.
Today, it is a beautiful place, full of life and flourishing youth, in which we live in harmony with the environment. We care for the land and animals, and our economy and way of life is simple.
We have adopted traditional forms of living, including the transportation of our household goods, and anything else we need to build our homes by donkey, as there is no vehicle access to our village.
In 2017, we face disturbing obstacles and administrative attacks, because we are living in a protected natural space, facing various indictments and legal charges. The prosecution wants to apply the law in a literal way, without taking into account the real impact of our "eco-rural" way of life, and we are facing criminal indictments of our buildings, accusing us of environmental and urban infractions, and threatening fines of hundreds of thousands of Euros, which we see as unfounded, demolishing our homes, and imprisoning us in the worst of cases.

Why this is important

By supporting this project you are helping to pave the way for intentional communities like ours to be accepted by existing municipalities.
It is important to create a legal path that can serve as a precedent for when administrations block or prohibit the repopulation of abandoned villages by those who seek a more sustainable low-consumption lifestyle.
We appeal to the growing numbers of you who feel solidarity with our vision, from our town and region, to your organizations, your acquaintances, your relatives in other cities and countries who align with models of sustainability, ecological responsibility, Degrowth, New Ruralism, etc. Either because you practice them yourself, or because you've been interested in them.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

We intend for this campaign to cover our legal defense and also to fund research into how our way of life potentially benefits the environment and contributes to the conservation and preservation of this place and its ecology.

Team and experience

El Calabacino has been evolving for more than 30 years governed by various forms of cooperative management. We recently joined the Iberian Ecovillage Network (RIE) and, like many of their members, we introduced Sociocracy as a model of organization and self-governance. This crisis has given us the opportunity to better organize our village. It has created a working circle of 15 people who are deeply involved in this work.

The Neighborhood Association is the legal body through which we officially and legally act. We also have a lawyer and several specialist from different fields (architecture, city planning, environmental impact assessment, biology, sociology, etc.) advising us.

Support in the defense of the affected families and struggle for the regularization of a necessary rural growth model
