General information
"Pitu" spent his entire life running. Fleeing the Franco regime, the refugee camp of Argeles-sur-Mer, the Dachau concentration camp, the Treblinka death camp, the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane ...
Today, 91 years old, under the ghost of his wife´s Alzheimer, he is driven to visit all the sites he previously escaped from, paradoxically beginning what will be his last flight: Fleeing Oblivion.
In just five years, during the period of 1939-1942, he became a survivor in all what the term entails. All sites he crossed became memorial museums; at the entrance of the village-museum Oradour-sur-Glane one can read "... so we won´t ever forget". A small tour through the memories of his exile gives us an idea of what the most significant historical period of the twentieth century was like.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
The documentary "Fleeing Oblivion" is a reconstructive voyage during which we accompany Josep Busó," Pitu ", in his visits to the sites of his five years of exile. A good part of these locations have been preserved as museums given the historical importance of the events that occurred there. This gives us the opportunity to walk with Josep down memory lane in spaces almost identical to those he saw seventy years ago.
In the past two years of the development of this project, the script was fully developed, the documentation has been concluded, much of the footage was collected, and there have been numerous interviews with Pitu. Now we are in the phase of filming the most important trips (the village of Martyr of Oradour -sur- Glane, Dachau concentration camp, and the submarine base in Bordeaux). We expect to finish this phase in early November.
So far we have worked independently and self-financed to cover the pre-production and filming that did not involve high costs. But now we need to attain sufficient financial resources to be able to travel with a 91-year-old man, taking into account his travel and accommodation needs.
This documentary film will be registered under Creative Commons. In the distribution phase, it will be disseminated as widely as possible (festivals, television, internet, copy - and - spread, ... )
Why this is important
The interest in carrying out a documentary about Josep Busó, " Pitu", came following another audiovisual project about exile that I was preparing a couple of years ago. The interviews focused on people exiled for a variety of reasons. Among the interviewees was my grandmother, Maria Jubert Ansesa, who was exiled for seven years in France after fleeing Franco's bombing of the city of Girona. Chance played a role in leading our research on exile: a person who found out about my interest told me about a neighbor of his, a certain Pitu, said to have escaped from a Nazi concentration camp. I decided to visit Pitu in the hope of interviewing him for my initial project. Upon visiting Pitu and hearing the story of his life I realized that I had to make a change of course in the approach. This energetic old man who cared for his wife suffering Alzheimer's has been hiding life-experiences that were integral for my research.
Throughout these two years and while we shared the experiences of Pitu, his need to remember intensified to the point that he wanted to visit the concentration camps from which he escaped 70 years ago .
This project is aimed at those who are interested in the memory of exile, and in the consequences of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. It is aimed at those who value social movies. In the way Alzheimer's affects individuals and those who live with people with Alzheimer´s. This project is for those who, judging the sad context in which we live, see in our society a society suffering Alzheimer´s, a society that forgets its past and repeats the same errors.
Goals of the crowdfunding campaign
With "Fleeing Oblivion" we hope to give voice to the silenced history. Through re-living Pitu´s memories, we hope to bring our collective memory to the surface, parting from the fact that his memories reflect episodes in the long chain that marked our recent history; and that, in some way, form one of the pillars of our collective memory.
Furthermore, we also aim to record the testimony of the protagonist witnesses of recent history. We believe it is very important to create an archive for the first-hand testimonies of these people while we can still count on their presence. After many years of silence, there is not much time to save their memories in an archive they deserve.
Through the crowdfunding we hope to collect the needed money in order to cover the last phase of filming, the editing and the soundtrack. Should we reach the minimum financial goal, we would be able to carry out these tasks and finalize the documentary. If we reach the optimum financial objective, the money will go to finance the acquisition of footage and photographs we can not get for free and that are important for the narrative. The money will also cover future expenses of distribution (sending to festivals, DVD printing, ... etc )

El guió, la direcció i la producció d'aquest projecte estan en mans d'Abel Moreno, realitzador català que fa anys que es dedica al documental social.
