Moving and Anchoring of pontoon bridge
The pontoon bridge Filippos has been carried away in one of the winter floods. After this the main path was cut in two and hikers have to make a long detour to access the inner part of the delta. The Pontoon bridge will be moved and anchored in the original area.
Restoration of the 2nd bridge
The fixed bridge in the entrance of the Gallikos delta has a severy damaged deck. While the deck has been replaced with available material, these are not safe.
Restoration and wateproofing of Ikaros
The observatory Ikaros has been neglected for some time and currently needs extensive restoration works. The roof is leaking significantly and parts of the deck aren't safe.
Reconstruction of the bridges base
The bridge's anchoring base has been damaged. For the bridge to be anchored the base should be restored.
Removal of old wooden deck
The old wooden deck has been rendered dangerous after all these years. The deck should be removed before a new one is installed
Reconstruction of the deck base
The metal base of the deck has corroded with years. A new base will be constructed to support the new deck
Repainting the bridge
The bridge has been corroded in places. Ehedorou Fysis will repaint the bridge taking care that all parts are safe.
Several parts of the trails have subsided, rendsering them impassable during the winter when the water is higher. The work will restore the paths.
Directional and Informational signs
A number of directional and informational sings wil be installed to help visitors take the most from their walk at the wetland.
Reconstruction of the pontoon bridge
A new deck, rails and other actions need to take place to make the pontoon bridge 100% safe and accessible. The costs corresponds to actions to bring back the Filippos pontoon bridge to its previous glory!

The Gallikos Delta Eco-path project aspires to restore the infrastructure in the wetland of the Gallikos, giving back to the public an area with significant ecological value.
The delta is an area of extreme beauty that hosts rich flora and bird fauna. For its significant habitats and its importance for bird species is part of the Axios - Loudias - Axios Estuaries Natura 2000 site.
The delta area is only 10km away from the centre of Thessaloniki; this critical ecosystem is an ideal area for bird-watching, hiking, and educational activities. Nevertheless, the infrastructure in the 3.5km trail network needs extensive restoration. Currently, damages render it impassable. This is why, at Ehedorou Fysis, we want to contribute to the restoration of the path connecting the area, in order to give it back to the public and allow people to enjoy its wonderful nature and environment. To achieve this, we need your help.
Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.
Our main objective is to give life back to the Gallikos Delta Eco-path, to open this magnificent naturalistic area for hikers and birdwatchers, but also for nature lovers in general, and restore the damages that it has suffered over time.
As this infographic shows, our project concretely advocates to achieve the following goals:
- the restoration of 2 bridges that limit the access of the path network and render it unsafe
- the restoration and waterproofing of the observatory "Ikaros", an ideal place for birdwatching
- new informarional and direction signs to render the area more accessible
Why this is important
The project will provide a secure, easily accessible site, ideal for an escape to nature. Moreover, it will provide educational institutions with a significant resource for environmental education. We consider it extremely important to bring students, young people, children, families and visitors in general back to this natural area, as their presence and interest is what makes the Gallikos Delta a living place for active learning, nature preservation and life.
The project provides more than unhindered access to birdwatchers, hikers, teachers, and schoolchildren. Since the paths became impassable, the area suffered illegal activities including dumping, hunting, and fishing. Better access will allow closer monitoring, thus safeguarding the overall integrity of the Natura site, while fostering public participation in the life and activities that the area can offer.
