The Gallikos Delta Eco-path project aspires to restore the infrastructure in the wetland of the Gallikos, giving back to the public an area with significant ecological value.
The delta is an area of extreme beauty that hosts rich flora and bird fauna. For its significant habitats and its importance for bird species is part of the Axios - Loudias - Axios Estuaries Natura 2000 site.
The delta area is only 10km away from the centre of Thessaloniki; this critical ecosystem is an ideal area for bird-watching, hiking, and educational activities. Nevertheless, the infrastructure in the 3.5km trail network needs extensive restoration. Currently, damages render it impassable. This is why, at Ehedorou Fysis, we want to contribute to the restoration of the path connecting the area, in order to give it back to the public and allow people to enjoy its wonderful nature and environment. To achieve this, we need your help.
Our main objective is to give life back to the Gallikos Delta Eco-path, to open this magnificent naturalistic area for hikers and birdwatchers, but also for nature lovers in general, and restore the damages that it has suffered over time.
As this infographic shows, our project concretely advocates to achieve the following goals:
The project will provide a secure, easily accessible site, ideal for an escape to nature. Moreover, it will provide educational institutions with a significant resource for environmental education. We consider it extremely important to bring students, young people, children, families and visitors in general back to this natural area, as their presence and interest is what makes the Gallikos Delta a living place for active learning, nature preservation and life.
The project provides more than unhindered access to birdwatchers, hikers, teachers, and schoolchildren. Since the paths became impassable, the area suffered illegal activities including dumping, hunting, and fishing. Better access will allow closer monitoring, thus safeguarding the overall integrity of the Natura site, while fostering public participation in the life and activities that the area can offer.
Giorgos Konstantinidis, a co-founder of Ehedorou Fysis, was born and raised in the area. He spent his childhood exploring the hidden gems of the Gallikkos delta and lived through its recent transformations. Giorgos studied technical civil engineering and an extensive experience in the construction sector, he has the knowledge and skills to successfully implement the project.
Ioannis Karakousis, is another co-founder of Ehedorou Fysis, born and raised in the area. With studies on the environment in the UK, Ioannis is also a member of a mountaineering club and a keen hiker. He brings in the project his love of Nature and his experience in trails.
Ehedorou Fysis is committed to the protection and development of the Gallikos (Echedoros) River Basin and especially its deltaic wetlands. Our love for nature and especially our relation with this natural area is what pushes our motivation to advocate for its protection and restoration. We strongly believe that people's involvement in a project like ours is essential to bring the Gallikos River Basin back to its splendor and also extremely valuable to foster public awareness on the importance of defending and protecting the life of our ecosystems to guarantee a better future for human beings.
