General information

The project is a creative documentary starting with the mystery of a song that was key during the anti-Franco dictatorship fight taking place in Spain during the 70s. The song title is ‘A Margalida’ and is written by Joan Isaac. It talks about a woman that disappeared. The lyrics go: “I don’t know where you are, Margalida”. But, who is Margalida? Margalida Bover was Salvador Puig Antich’s lover, the young Catalan anarchist widely known as the last sentenced to death using “garrote vil”, a popular strangulation method enforced during the dictatorship. At that time he was 24 years old and Margalida 21. In this film, we have found Margalida, who is not lost anymore. Nowadays she is 66 years old and lives in Mallorca. She disappeared for a lot of years and is now ready to talk and do a physical and emotional trip with us in order to heal wounds and close the circle.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

Margalida portrays a woman who at the age of 20 was devastated when her lover was killed, right at the beginning of their relationship. Their love was interrupted at peak of the passion and remained hanging within time. Following this traumatic fact, Margalida decided to leave behind everything that reminded her of Salvador, disappearing for more than 30 years.

Nowadays, thanks to the appearance of certain young filmmakers interested in her story, she is now ready to redeem the past. And we ask ourselves: can someone continue being in love with a person who died 45 years ago? This documentary focuses on Margalida’s physical and emotional trip to a Salvador memorial in Barcelona. This trip is seen as a return to a bygone time in order to come back to the present then,
in Mallorca.

Margalida is a touching story showing a passionate, funny, complex and conflicted character, who wants to share her fears with us in a sincere manner. The approach of the film has some artistic intention. We have let things happen for themselves, often positioning ourselves as travelling companions.

Why this is important

We believe Margalida is a necessary project because of the open wounds of Fracoism persisting nowadays and because it reflects personal stories rather than big heroes. Also, Margalida is specially touching because it explains, above all, a survival and love story.

The idea of doing a professional project has been a challenge for us. We believed that this story deserved to be our first documentary film. This idea has finally become a dedicated work as a result of a lot of dedication, a huge curiosity and a big desire for exploring our creative capacities.

Team and experience

Margalida is an original idea of Constança Amengual, Francesca Mas and Joan Lluís Oliver, directed by Francesca Mas and Constança Amengual and produced by Novembre Films (production company we have recently created thanks to this project). We have studied in audiovisual and cinema areas and have experience in video, television, media and communication.
