General information

Art is much more than an expression of ideas and emotions. It has been shown that the visual arts have therapeutic effects on people with different types of mental disorders, especially intellectual disabilities. At the Joan Mesquida Special Education Center, a school for people with intellectual disabilities located in Manacor (Mallorca), we wish to further implement these techniques by offering our students the opportunity to learn and have fun creating large-scale murals. To do this, we want to organize a workshop with the local artist Sath, who would introduce the students to the art of mural painting. The goal is for the students to be able to express their own messages in the artwork, and to feel like they can identify with it.

Description of the project. Main features, strengths and differentials.

At the Joan Mesquida Special Education Center, we are aware of the power of art as a therapeutic tool and have been using it for quite some time. However, we now wish to introduce our students to the art of spray painting, so they can experience the freedom of painting directly on walls or buildings, and the satisfaction of capturing messages immediately.

The project will consist of two parts:

WORKSHOP (at CEE Joan Mesquida, Manacor), June 14th-17th

To introduce the students to the mural technique, we first will develop a workshop in which the students will create a mural in the school’s courtyard, measuring about 14 meters long by 2 meters high, over the course of 3 days. About 20 young people from the Aproscom Foundation’s education center will participate in the initiative, with the help of the artist Sath, which we hope will develop their creativity and interest in art by involving them in the creation of the final artwork. They will use spray paint and acrylics.

MURAL (at Can Dinsky art gallery, Son Servera), June 20th-27th

The title Somriu means “Smile” and Som riu means “We are river.”

Once they know the techniques, the students will be able to use them to help create a work of art on the side of the Can Dinsky art gallery, in the village of Son Servera. Sath will create a large-scale portrait of one of the students, from the waist up, holding a photo of a river over his or her mouth. This river will curve into the shape of a smile, releasing happiness and positivity. The students will help to write the names of the crowdfunding campaign’s contributors on the wall.

Why this is important

The project has two motivations. The first one is to evolve and improve our use of art as a therapeutic tool. The second is to involve citizens in the development of these children and show the great potential they have, despite their intellectual disabilities.

The large-scale mural painting will be created with the intention of eliciting a reaction and promoting dialogue with the viewer. It’s an outdoor museum open at all times, by and for everyone. In our project’s case, the work Som-riu wishes to express the daily struggle and difficulties that people with disabilities face; adapting, like water in a river, to the stones and adversities they encounter on their path. Though, fortunately, nowadays they are more integrated in our society.

In addition, the final artwork will beautify the public space, bringing form and color to an otherwise sad and degraded surface, evoking pride and smiles from the local population, and providing an incentive to attract tourists to the area.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The project’s primary objective is to make new tools available to the school center’s students that will stimulate their intellectual development. The students will also have, in the school center and in a specific location in Son Servera, permanent works of art in which they have participated and with which they can identify. The project will also allow students to work alongside an artist for the first time, and to get to know him as a person and as a professional.

Sath's participation as a teacher is also particularly interesting, because while he is a local artist, he currently resides in Thailand; this may spark an interest within the students to discover new cultures and customs.

Team and experience

JOAN MESQUIDA SPECIAL EDUCATION CENTER

The Joan Mesquida Special Education Center is concerted with the Department for Education and Culture of the Balearic Government, which assists students with special educational needs between the ages of 6 and 21 years old. The center's mission is to provide students with individualized lessons that will allow them to fully develop their capabilities in order to integrate into the community environment.

The educational service is firmly committed to a model of an inclusive school. The development of people with disabilities depends heavily on their participation in favorable environments and the provision of appropriate aids.

The school is one of the services offered by the Aproscom Foundation, a social nonprofit organization which aims to defend the rights of people with intellectual disabilities and to provide them with the support that they need.

SATH

Sath opened his eyes for the first time in 1983 on the island of Mallorca. After several years as a self-taught painter, in 2004 he began a career in graphic design in the city of Palma.

Sath uses figurative elements to create colorful, slightly surreal pieces, often featuring impossible situations or actions, but never neglecting the message. Everyday life situations melt and transform into new ones, creating meanings that differ from their original context. He pursues the idea of re-contextualization as a tool to construct new meanings.

Using spray painting as his preferred coloring technique since 2002, this visual communicator shares his curiosity and thoughts through painting, either on canvas or by making a different use of the urban environment, mainly outside of the context of traditional art venues.
